See what he had to say about his alma mater: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Jack: Berkeley is very urban and although there arent many skyscrapers, most of what you see around you will be buildings. It has a good public transit system with both buses and the subway which make it very convenient to get around the area without a car. The campus itself is beautiful. Its an older school, so many of the buildings were built across different times with different architectural styles. Besides that, the campus has a lot of grassy areas and different types of trees, which makes it enjoyable to walk around in between classes. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Jack: Like any other huge university, how available your professors, TAs, and advisors are depends on your department and overall luck. In other words, there are both helpful and not-so-helpful people. In my opinion, though, most of the people you meet are willing to help you if you make the effort to meet them and follow their advice. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Jack: The dorm life is great. Theyve built new dorms recently and have facilities for students to do different activities. Theres a variety of dining options, many of which are open late. People in the dorms are friendly and all looking to make new friends. Also, if youre lucky, youll get assigned a dorm room thats high up and facing the bay; I guarantee you that no other dorm room anywhere in this country will have a better view. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Jack: The most popular majors are Business, Microbiology, and Engineering. The school does a good job of supporting all the majors offered, but those three are probably the best represented in terms of funding, student involvement, and recruiting opportunities. I studied Environmental Economics because the subject interested me, and the department, faculty, and peers were terrific. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Jack: Its extremely easy to meet people and make friends as a freshman. Chances are that people in your dorm are looking to make friends, too. Not only that, but there are clubs or events on campus for nearly every activity/interest, so its easy to find friends outside the dorms as well. Greek life is pretty significant also but by no means is the only way to socialize and have fun. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Jack: The Career Center is extremely helpful if you use it. They offer lots of services including recruiting events, helping with your resume, mock interviews, and career advising. Since UC-Berkeley is a reputable school, many top companies recruit from our campus. Not only local startups, but internationally renowned companies from every industry often send recruiters to our campus. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Jack: Cal has a bunch of places to study. There are over 10 libraries on campus in addition to learning centers, study lounges, cafes, and even some open classrooms you could use. The weather is great most of the year, so many people end up studying outside, too. Youll always find more than enough space to do your work with the exception of the week before finals. Berkeley students seem to spontaneously multiply that week. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Jack: The surrounding area is great. There are a lot of things to do around Berkeley, but if you want to explore more, then Oakland and San Francisco are right next to it as well. Both are easily accessible through the bus and subway system. The entire Bay area is beautiful and because of the start-up culture, youll find a lot of neat little shops and eateries around the area. Its a great place to be if you like being outdoors. Just three miles west of campus is the marina/ocean where you can go fishing, boating, or have a nice meal at the docks. A mile from campus in the other direction will take you up the hills where theres a nice hiking trail that yields amazing views of the campus, city, bridge, and surrounding bay. If youre big into scenery, this is hands-down the best college to go to. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Jack: Cal has a huge population and most of the classes you take will be in giant lectures where you will hardly get a chance to ask questions. This is offset by the discussion classes, which are headed by graduate student instructors (GSIs) and more personalized with 10-30 students. As you progress, classes generally get smaller. Personally, the class sizes did not bother me. I know some people learn better with smaller classes, but professors and GSIs usually hold enough office hours to allow those students to come in and work through problems they have in classes. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Jack: The most memorable class I took was one that I ended up dropping actually. Its an extremely popular class taught during the spring semester by Robert Reich, former Secretary of Labor. That year, there was a film crew working on a documentary about the subject, and they attended every class with us along with their film equipment. Because of the classs popularity, its assigned the biggest lecture hall, designed to seat 700 students. The first lecture was filled with much more than that, though, because we had students who werent enrolled attending in hopes of being added to the roster. So with them, the film crew, the enrolled students, and random fans of Professor Reich who had no affiliation with the campus but wanted to see him lecture, there were easily over 1,000 people packed in the room. There were people sitting on the floor, peeking in from outside the door; the whole thing had a concert vibe to it. It was also the biggest fire hazard Ive been in, which prompted me to d rop it. The lengths of all the three sides of the triangle are equal. Thus triangle PQR is equilateral. b. Since the lengths of two sides DE and FD are equal to each other, thus triangle DEF is isosceles. c. In triangle ABC all the sides are of different lengths, so this triangle is scalene. Example 2: The sum of the three sides of triangle XYZ is 36 cm. If YZ = 12 cm, ZX = 13 cm then what type of triangle is XYZ? Solution: It is given that the sum of the three sides of a triangle is 36 cm. The importance of practice tests

The importance of practice tests Hello AJ Tutoring clients and friends! We hope you all had a great Thanksgiving and youre ready for the busy December season of finals, concerts, and family gatherings.One thing on the minds of many juniors these days is getting ready for the March SAT. At this point, Ive already completed a couple tutoring sessions with many of my juniors and theyre getting ready to take their first full practice tests.Completing full practice tests is a great way for students to get the feel of the test and track their progress. Sometimes, though, a student will come to our next tutoring session with the test partially completed, or not done under ideal circumstances. This ends up partly wasting the students time, since we cant get an accurate idea of where hes at with the test. Which begs the question: what should it look like when students do practice tests for homework?If possible, we always encourage students to take proctored tests offered some Saturday mornings at AJ Tutorings Palo Alto offic e. Well tell students what to do and when, just like the day of the test. This takes guesswork out of the equation and gives accurate results. Plus, students get their tutoring homework done in one morning. Win-win!But if its not possible to come in for a proctored test, students should do the test at home, in an environment that resembles the testing environment as closely as possible (minus all the other stressed-out students). What should this look like?1. NO DISTRACTIONS! This is so important. Most high schoolers treat their phones like extra appendages. You cant have phones during the SAT, so dont have them out while youre taking a practice test. You can use the phone as a timer, but put it across the room. No talking, no texting, no Facebook. 2. Do the whole test in one sitting. Yes, this is hard, and yes, it will take about four hours. Yes, we know you have sports and theater and hours of homework to do. But test day is a marathon, not a sprint. Lots of students could get gre at scores, if only they could split up the test over three days. Dont be one of those people! The SAT is partly testing your ability to focus and think for several hours straight, so you need to practice that. No shortcuts here! 3. Time it like the actual test. Follow the timing directions at the top of each section, and set a timer to go off when times up. Stop writing when you hear the timer, and dont fill in more answers. 4. Go in order. Dont do all the math sections at once, or all the reading and writing sections together. Complete sections in the order theyre presented in the test. 5. Take the test when youre feeling rested. Weekend mornings are a great time to take practice tests because the test itself is given on a Saturday morning. Regardless of what day you choose to complete the practice test, dont start it at 9 pm on a Thursday night after you finished all your other homework. Practice tests completed at 1 am never end well, trust me. 6. Parents, help create a good envi ronment. Make sure your son or daughter has a cleaned-off place to sit and complete the test without distractions. Dont interrupt them to talk or ask questions. Encourage them to do the test in one sitting, and provide positive reinforcement when they get it done. Put the test up on the fridge after they get the score back (okay, you dont have to do the last part).Completing several practice tests under testing conditions is one of the best predictors we at AJ Tutoring have found for a students eventual score improvement. Implementing the advice above is sure to help you have a great test day when March finally rolls around.

This is totally understandable: moving overseas to a new country with an entirely unique set of cultural norms can be intimidating, especially when you’re moving alone and you’ve never visited the city before. Much of the material posted there is precautionary, but it’s best to have a full picture of the region you’re interested in. Dress appropriately Observing how the locals dress and following suit will serve you well, especially if the local dress is moderate. This will prevent any unwanted attention. Keep a low profile and minimize the Western attire you go out in as well. This means baseball hats, sweatpants, jeans, etc. Familiarize yourself with your neighborhood Get to know your neighborhood well and learn which areas are safe and which aren’t. Your school will likely have this type of orientation information for you. Because the school has its teachers’ best interests at heart, you won’t be asked to live in unsafe neighborhoods, but being aware of surroundings is still important. Many travel websites (like Wikitravel, for example), will share with you information about each neighborhood in a city and will give you tips on staying safe while abroad. Pay attention to your belongings As with anywhere you go, pickpockets target the unaware tourist, so do your best to avoid looking like one. Again, take care to minimize your profile by avoiding wearing flashy jewelry or watches. Remember that marketplaces, festivals, public transportation stations, and popular tourist sites are prime locations for petty theft. Keep copies of all your travel documents safe Store your documents and personal information (visas, passports, identification, etc) in a safe, secure place. If you're heading out around the city for the day, leave your passport and other important id at home. If you take smart steps and get into a good routine while teaching overseas, just as you do in your hometown, you should have no problems while you’re abroad!
